International Day of the Girl

Celebrating International Day of the Girl

There is no denying that girls around the world face a staggering number of challenges. From lack of education to lesser opportunities, there is a clear discrepancy in their worlds. Countless global reports confirm this - but what can we do?

Statistics repeatedly show that educating girls helps to break the poverty cycle, leads to improved health outcomes, reduces exploitation and delivers skills for life which support entire communities to prosper. Yet it is estimated that more than 130 million girls around the world are being denied their right to an education.

In 2023, UNICEF are calling to invest in girls' rights, their leadership, and wellbeing. With a resounding call for change around the world, it's imperative that the global community supports the progression and development. Focuses from UNICEF, as well as government and civil society partners, for IDOTG 2023 include girls in the protection and promotion of rights, recognise girls' leadership, support adolescent wellbeing and scale funding.

Globally, 1 in 5 girls are still not completing lower secondary education, with many not having internet access. Meanwhile, it's said that with every additional year of education, the potential of income increases by 10%-20%. At FCM Meetings & Events, we have to ask ourselves, what can we do to help?

Our Partners for 2023

FCM Meetings & Events are committed to doing their part in bringing this issue to the top of conversations, and bringing awareness to gender equality, the need for education, and the desire for all girls to have the same opportunities. So, we ask ourselves, how can we step up and empower girls - both in our communities, and around the world. This is why we are excited to be celebrating International Day of the Girl (IDOTG) again in 2023.

After a successful celebration and awareness raising in 2022, FCM Meetings & Events have chosen to help girls in the Australian foster system, wanting to give them a chance at a better life. That's why, for the second year in a row, we have partnered with the Pyjama Foundation, a partner of the Flight Centre Foundation

Children in the foster care system have the lowest education outcomes nationally, giving them a lifetime of disadvantage. This Australian based charity offers 'Pyjama Angels' to children in foster care, who are able to provide mentorship, education, positivity, and a positive role model. Known as the 'Love of Learning program', this initiate has gone on support over 1200 each week, with more than 103,000 hours of support being provided to children in care annually.

"We need to allow the voice of women and girls to become louder in our communities and give them the opportunities they need for a brighter future" said Simone Seiler, Global General Manager of FCM Meetings & Events. "That’s why we ask that you join us on Wednesday 11th October, to celebrate International Day of the Girl and support future generations of Australian girls.”

FCM Meetings & Events is deeply committed to contributing towards five of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), making them our own through the application of our time, effort, and strategic creative thinking.
