When travelling domestically in New Zealand, following the traffic lights system (COVID-19 Protection Framework) protects Aotearoa New Zealand from COVID-19.

Domestic Border Requirements

Rules vary by region and everyone is required to follow Government requirements. A border closure may apply depending on the current alert levels.

  • Areas in Green
    • At Green, there is limited community transmission, and our health system is ready to respond. 
    • You can travel anywhere at Green, but you must wear a face covering on flights. For the latest information, see here.
    • Accommodation can open at Green with no restrictions. For the latest information, see here.

     

  • Areas in Orange
    • At Orange, there will be community transmission of COVID-19, with increasing risks to vulnerable communities, and pressure on the health system. 
    • You can travel anywhere for any reason at Orange. For the latest information, see here.
    • Accommodation can open at Orange without restrictions. For the latest information, see here.

     

  • Areas in Red 
    • You can travel around New Zealand at Red, except for temporary Auckland restrictions. For the latest information, see here.
