Hotel Loyalty Overview: COVID-19 Update

Many hotel chains are making changes to their loyalty programs to help their customers maintain their status levels and point totals despite the near-total travel freeze we’re experiencing.
Here is a quick list of what they’ve announced as of April 9, 2020 thanks to our team at 4th Dimension Consulting

Hilton Honors 
Hilton will make updates to the requirements for earning tier status for 2021. Hilton has not yet announced what the new terms will be. We will update as they release details.  

2019 Status Extension: All members whose 2019 status was scheduled to be downgraded on March 31, 2020—whether it’s Diamond, Gold or Silver—will automatically receive an extension through March 31, 2021. 

2020 Status Extension: 2020 member status will extend through March 31, 2022. 

Points Extension: Hilton will pause the expiration of all Points scheduled to expire between now and December 31, 2020. 

Weekend Night Rewards Earned on Eligible Hilton Credit Cards: Hilton has extended the expiration date of all unexpired Weekend Night Rewards as of March 11, 2020, and all new ones issued until August 30, 2020, through the end of next summer (August 31, 2021).

Marriott Bonvoy Rewards
Marriot Bonvoy has announced that status earned in 2019 will be extended to February 2022 and has paused the expiration of points until February 2021. At that time, your points will only expire if your account has been inactive for at least 24 months. 

Free Night Awards (as part of a credit card benefit, Annual Choice Benefit, Promotion or Travel Package) with an expiration starting March 1, 2020 will be extended through January 31, 2021. The system will automatically complete the updates by the end of April 2020. 

Suite Night Awards with an expiration date of December 31, 2020 will be extended to December 31, 2021. The system will automatically complete the updates by the end of June 2020.

World of Hyatt
World of Hyatt has extended elite tier status and award expiration dates for all members globally.  

Hyatt will be suspending the forfeiture of points through Decemeber 31, 2020. Under normal circumstances, World of Hyatt points expire after two years of inactivity.  

Hyatt is postponing the introduction of Off-peak and Peak point redemption (originally planned for March 22, 2020) until 2021. This means that free-night redemptions will continue to be at standard rates for the rest of this year.

Radisson Rewards
Radisson Hotels is extending its point expiration policy by 6 months, effective March 1, 2020. 

Radisson has extended the elite status through February 2022, for those that would have expired February 2021. 

In addition, e-certs earned using the Radisson Reward Visa card can be redeemed through June 30, 2021.

IHG Rewards Club
IHG Rewards is reducing the Elite membership criteria required (nights or points) this year by 25% or more.  Intercontinental Ambassador free weekend night certificates have been extended by six months.

Choice Hotels
Choice has paused points expiration until May 31, 2020.
