Showcasing our FCM female leaders on International Women’s Day 2019

International Women's Day

Today, on International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating all the amazing women who are part of the FCM family around the globe - both clients and staff – and what they’ve achieved. Women’s Day is an international day to recognise the incredible contributions womankind are making in the world. As such, we spoke to one lady who has had a phenomenal impact at FCM…

With nearly four years in her current role and over 23 years’ experience in the travel industry, Charlene Leiss, the President of US Corporate Brands in the Flight Centre Travel Group, gave us her thoughts on what it takes for a woman to be a leader:

Celebrating International Women's Day - Charlene Leiss

What do you think makes a great leader?

A great leader leads by example, surrounds herself with talented people that she trusts and respects, and takes steps to identify and empower the next great leader.

What benefits do you think women bring to the table in leadership?

I think our inherent (and generally necessary!) ability to multitask and make things work for our family (whatever that entails) gives us incredible motivation and the ability to get things done.

Who is your greatest influencer?

My father. He does everything to the highest standard, every time. And he told me I could be anything I wanted to be.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt in terms of leadership?

You can’t be everybody’s friend. Many decisions are difficult, and it can be a bit lonely at times.

What is the best decision you ever made?

Putting the right people in the right roles (like Amanda Vining as SME Brand Leader!) I get lots of great advice.

What is the worst decision you ever made?

Anytime I have held back or not trusted my gut – never ignore the voice in your head!

What do you think is the biggest barrier to female leadership?

Our own lack of confidence and the feeling that we need to be everything to all people.
